Vent covers can be filled with a light-transmitting material. This combines two functions in a single roof opening: the vent acts as a point rooflight and brings daylight into the building, while remaining ready to operate in the event of fire. Independently of the fire protection function, the vents let you air the building periodically.

The vents are triggered in two ways. Automatically — once the triggering device, that is, the smoke detector, responds — and manually, by pressing the smoke vent button. In both cases the signal starts the actuators that open the vent covers. The system can therefore work without human involvement, and a person who notices the danger can open the vents themselves without waiting for the detector.
