Correctly distributed across the roof, they provide optimum daylight access to the interior, which helps reduce energy costs. Combined with additional vents they enable proper ventilation, and in the event of a fire they exhaust smoke and heat.

The shape of the rooflight is selected to suit the character of the building: the curved form is the most common, but for architectural reasons a rooflight can also be built as a triangular or flat unit.
